What should you EAT to stay healthy?

What should you EAT to stay healthy?

  • Focus on filling your plate: Half VEGETABLES (FIBER), a quarter LEAN MEAT (PROTEIN), and a quarter NUTS and SEEDS (HEALTHY FAT). Bonus: Wild-caught Salmon can serve as both a healthy fat and lean protein
    • I want people to stop feeling guilty for what else may be on their plate and start finding things that they are proud that they can put on their plate and eat. If you focus on increasing what is healthy, eventually, you will find there is not room for what is unhealthy.
      • TAKE PRIDE IN WHAT YOU EAT

  • If you are diabetic or trying to cut back on sugar intake:
    • AVOID THINGS THAT ARE WHITE, OR USED TO BE WHITE
      • Refined sugar snacks can be replaced by natural raw fruit
      • Pasta can be replaced with Zuchinni noodles
      • White Rice can be replaced with Wild Rice
      • White Potatoes can be replaced with Sweet Potatoes
      • White flour can be removed from many foods by simply searing or grilling what you might normally batter
      • Flour is also used in most baked goods, like cake and bread. Do not even think about saying that your chocolate cake or brownies are brown. There is a reason that I said "used to be" white.

  • If you have high blood pressure or are trying to cut back on sodium/salt:
    • Roasting Vegetables at 400 degrees for 10-15 minutes with your favorite seasoning (I like Mrs. Dash Garlic & Herb or Table Blend) can replace processed or unhealthy food choices
    • RECOGNIZE SODIUM CONTENT in general types of food
      • FRESH IS BEST- Natchez has a Saturday Farmer’s Market (8a-12p) and Vidalia has a Wednesday Farmer's market
      • Frozen is better than canned, if you are having trouble keeping food fresh
      • Cans or boxed foods are generally processed and contain larger amounts of sodium and other harmful chemicals
    • Heart-healthy choices also involves replacing fried, greasy and red meat foods, which can increase cholesterol->increase plaque->and increase risks of heart attack and stroke
